Though it would have been considered a perfect death by his standards, John did not find his first impression of the afterlife all that impressive. In truth, he didn't even realize he was dead. All John knows is that he has woken up in a well-lit area, in a state of nature, with a young man dressed in armor looking over him. Through a short comical exchange, John realizes his onlooker isn't a creep, but rather St. Mykel, the Archangel. Mykel explains that he is there to escort John through purgatory. Throughout the journey John will face several obstacles, including a hallway with portraits of the old man's early life, an autumn forest where John encounters his personal and very real demons, and wheat fields where John gets to see the people who shaped his life, including Mother Mary and his stillborn daughter. The path John must follow will test his spiritual stamina, and allow the old man to decipher God's work in his life, and what his purpose truly was.
