Maria, at 14, journeys with a caravan through Mexico to the U.S. border as an unaccompanied teenager, hoping to leave behind the horrific conditions of her native Guatemala. The dangerous trip to America's border has left her with emotional scars and secrets that she is afraid to share with her son, Pepe. Pepe is conflicted; he lives in a wealthy Hispanic-American community, but his mother cleans the houses of the rich. Pepe is ashamed. And he doesn't know who his father is; his mother will not speak of the man.
