West Indian plantation societies, with all their prejudices and arbitrariness, coupled with denominational rivalry, did not constitute the best atmosphere in which the mission of the Christian churches could take place. The assessments of writers on the work of churches are often harsh, and not based on sound knowledge of any particular church. The papers contained this book are intended to make a contribution towards a better understanding of these churches and, hopefully, towards a more balanced assessment of their work.
