The exchange suggests an attractive conceit: philosophy as a journey, the philosopher as traveller. Like other poetic conceits, it can be elaborated endlessly, to illuminating, puzzling or comic effect. For instance, it is possible to ask, in the terms of this conceit, why leave home at all?
