Count Giancarlo Vincenzo delle Rovere returns to Rome from exile to reclaim his family's estate which had been confiscated by Mussolini 20 years earlier and hosts a dinner party for his supporters. Among the guests are the beautiful former MI6 agent, Penelope Standish, whom he fell in love with while in exile, his first love, the elegant Duchess Emilia Orsini, and her ambitious husband Senator Manfredi, whose body is found the following morning in the count's private study with the count's large, antique dagger protruding from his back. Inspector Bocagrande, a dedicated communist, dislikes the old nobility and immediately suspects the count, forcing delle Rovere and Penelope to prove his innocence. Their investigation leads them into the labyrinthian world of Italian politics and crime and brings them into the middle of a turf war between Guido Barbieri, the capo dei capi of the camorra and Vito Mori, head of the 'ndrangheta crime syndicate. The drama escalates along with the body count as Penelope and the count continue their investigation. The situation comes to a head when Penelope and the count uncover the 'man in the middle' whose greed and misjudgment was the cause of all the evil.
