Inspector Bocagrande, a dedicated communist, dislikes the old nobility and immediately suspects the count, forcing delle Rovere and Penelope to prove his innocence. Their investigation leads them into the labyrinthian world of Italian politics and crime and brings them into the middle of a turf war between Guido Barbieri, the capo dei capi of the camorra and Vito Mori, head of the 'ndrangheta crime syndicate. The drama escalates along with the body count as Penelope and the count continue their investigation. The situation comes to a head when Penelope and the count uncover the 'man in the middle' whose greed and misjudgment was the cause of all the evil.
