Born in London in 1954, he moved to Leeds at the age of nine. On a holiday to Scarborough, he was taken on the pirate ship the Hispaniola, which was on a lake called The Mere. The crew were dressed as pirates and took the kids to a small island on the lake to dig for doubloons which were exchanged for sixpences.
