This book describes the knowledge necessary for understanding accelerator driven subcritical nuclear reactors (ADSRs), also known as hybrid reactors. It begins with a discussion of the general energy problem and the elementary physics of neutron reactors. The authors then examine the specifics of ADSR, from neutron sources to safety features, and evaluate a number of proposed designs. Topics include the size of hybrid reactors, fuel evolution with its relevance to safety, waste production and incineration, the conditions for having a constant reactivity over a sufficiently long period of time, waste transmutation policies, and the potential advantage of the Thorium cycle.
