Distillery Spentwash is one of the most problematic wastes on the planet. In order to provide proper disposal options, governments all over the world have come up with different schemes. Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, has given several such options, which include Concentration of Spentwash followed by incineration, and biodigestion followed by composting etc. Concentration of Spentwash results in the generation of large quantities of vapors rich in entrapped volatile organic matter content, which results in a stream of wastewater which may create a hazard to the environment if disposed untreated. Therefore, a method is being tried out at several sites in order to gauge the treatments suitable for the stream. Being biologically degradable in nature, Biological Treatment mode is suitable. Anaerobic mode, due to its several advantages and suitablity, was preferred. As the stream has very low TSS concentration,Anaerobic Filter mode was selected and assessed. Based on the results, a benchmark mathematical relationship was developed based on previous research of scientists, and constants were obtained for Anaerobic Filter treating distillery condensate.
