Navigation channels plays a very important role in the logistic world. Its maintenance is rarely systematically done nor taught in the marine technology classroom. This book describes the systemic approach to maintenance and improvement of waterways for safe and efficient navigation in channels. The book presents the requirements for channel condition, the operation, the environment, the waterway geometry, the hydrography and sediment that enable the planner to optimize the design. Sustainability requirement for channel maintenance, concept of risk based design, uncertainty, community participation are presented. The book provides procedures and case study for determination of waterway parameter, channel dimensioning, dredging output towards meeting requirements towards decision support for efficient utilization of a waterway by large traffic and specify size of the vessel.
