Globalisation in its various forms has impacted the ways of lives of developing countries in different ways. The economic, social and political aspects as well as the cultural experiences of indigenous peoples have, in the process of globalisation, been subjected to tremendous transformations. This book draws from such experiences in various parts of the globe to support the author's general views on the subject. He proceeds to analyse the significance of the art of singing to the lives of the Mandinka, particularly those of the Gambia in West Africa. The author draws from from various sources of information and examines various categories of song common both in the Mande heartland and its diaspora. He goes further to describe how different global trends impact the art of the professional singers as well as "modern" artists in the Gambia before giving suggestions to restore lost glory.
