A carbon nanotube (CNT) can be considered as the ultimate fiber, reflecting highly organized, near ideal sp2 bonded carbon structure. CNTs are flexible but very hard to stretch and have extremely low turn-on fields and high current densities ranking them amongst the best electron field emitters for future field emission displays. These exceptional properties of CNTs have been investigated for devices such as field-emission displays, scanning probe microscopy tips and micro-electronic devices etc. The thesis focuses on synthesis of carbon nanotubes on nanocrystalline films by Low-Pressure CVD and Electron Cyclotron Resonance CVD and their future application as field emitters. Different Ni95Ti5, Fe70Pd30 and Fe70Pt30 nanocrystalline films as catalyst material were prepared by vapour condensation technique. The alloys of Ni95Ti5, Fe70Pt30 and Fe70Pd30 were prepared using arc-discharge method. The morphologies of the as-grown CNT film were obtained using SEM, TEM and HRTEM, Raman Spectrometer and FESEM.

Samina Husain received her B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D in Physics, Electronics and Nanotechnology - Carbon Nanotubes rexpectively, from Delhi University, India. Her research interest is in the field of carbon nanotubes plasma technology and their applications. Presently, she is working as Research Associate with Council of Scientific Inductrial Research.
