Tate is an Eagle Scout who spent thirty years as a scout leader in four countries. He has been on the Board of Directors of Virginia Veterinary Medical Association for eighteen years and part of the VA State Animal Response Team for fifteen years. He was on the VA Medical Reserve Corps as a veterinarian for fifteen years and a member of the National MRC for three years. In addition to this illustrious veterinary career, Dr. Tate also served in the US Air Force Veterinary Corps for twenty years. His two sons, Sam and Andy, are also retired military. His first wife, Shirley, died of breast cancer in 1997, and he married Dianne in 1999. They have four grandchildren.
