Among the food-grains, rice is the principal crop in the state of Assam. The agro-climatic situation prevailing across the zones favours rice cultivation in the state. Hence, the state being one of the main rice growing states of India can contribute a lot to the national economy. The area, production and productivity of crops fluctuate with time. Change in productivity is basically technological and hence, more promising. Therefore, a quantitative assessment of growth and instability as well as adoption pattern of technologies assumes significance in the context of agricultural development in the state. In an agrarian state like Assam, assessment of food security status is of great importance in the backdrop of the higher population growth due to natural growth and influx of people from other states of India and neighbouring countries. In the present study, an attempt has been made to assess the rice production system in Assam with critical analysis of changes in production technologies, adoption, asset acquisition and food security status of rice farmers. The book will be useful to research scholars, policy makers and agricultural planners.
