I wrote Sly, Nemo, & The Cloud back in 1999 in Dr. David Lloyd's creative writing class when I was attending LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY. Outside of a few minor adjustments and typos, I didn't make many other major changes to the original first draft. I always envisioned that one day I'd have a son named Jude and another named Leo... and when the time was right, I'd ask them to illustrate it, and we'd publish it for everyone to read. Nemo was a rescue dog I happily adopted in 1995 in the Albany, NY area when he was just a little puppy. He and his siblings had been buried alive by their owner because they weren't purebred. Thankfully they were saved, and I was fortunate enough to end up with one of them... whom I named Nemo. One of my college friends said it meant "fighter" to some Eskimo tribes. I still don't know if that's true. But one thing I do know is that dog was an amazing companion and never gave up. He was the Seabiscuit of dogs. He's the only dog I've ever actually seen cry...real teardrops under his eye when I was going through a tough time. He helped save my life. Though he's long since passed on... and there's been a half dozen or more other amazing dogs in my life that came after Nemo... at times I can still feel him sitting next to me or pulling the leash when I'm out walking only by myself. Nowadays, I'm not afraid to be proud and happy to be able to say that my wife and two boys are big dog lovers just as much as me...
