problems that emerge in a first time online course
for novice online adult learners. It is a study on
design strategies focusing at both the macro and
micro levels to create a course which fosters the
building of an online learning community. The
research explores the online learners
experiences and investigates their interactions. It

an online course with traditional expectations. The
author strongly recommends the need to conduct
induction courses (1) for prospective online adult
learners on how to learn online , and (2) to train
trainers and e-moderators on'the use of information,
communication and technology with first time online

design, deliver and conduct online courses. It should

Sharon Rolé BSc, MEd(Sheffield), CChem, MRSC: has been teaching
online chemistry and e-learning at the University of Malta. She
has designed and delivered online courses for adults at work and
in Higher Education. She is currently conducting doctoral
research in e-learning at the University of Nottingham.
