Autorenporträt
Shirl Crimmins Smith has over thirty years of experience and knowledge that she utilized to develop techniques that enriched the health and education of her daughter with ADHD, Learning Disabilities, and Minimal Brain Disorder. It was from the trenches of fighting a daily battle of chaotic and hostile behavior, from her then four-year-old child Rebecca, which compelled her pursuit to find answers. She had depleted her arsenal of parenting tricks with her obstinate daughter and headed to her local library simply looking for clarification and strategies for dealing with the ADHD symptoms. However, what she discovered was that trying to decipher the information was like falling into a deep rabbit hole. The multidimensional disorder was complexed and entailed reading over 110 books, multiple articles, and watching numerous televised programs on this perplexing disorder. Throughout this immense exploration, she was persistent in her objective of finding a safe and effective method for managing the behaviors of ADHD, which led her to the book by Dr. Ben F. Feingold, Why Your Child Is Hyperactive that launched her intense journey to help her daughter. Smith followed the all-natural diet and strategies from Dr. Feingold's book which achieved extraordinary improvements regarding Rebecca's erratic behaviors. The change was so dramatic that word reached the local newspaper who sent a reporter to the house for an interview. Both mother and child were featured in the front-page article, along with their photo, explaining her success with the Feingold Diet. Shirl attributes much of her success in raising Rebecca because of cultivating strategies during the seventeen years she worked with School Psychologists, Speech and Language Specialists, Social Workers, and Special Education Teachers. Over the years, Shirl has helped multiple parents in giving them a better understanding of ADHD, an explanation of how to use the Feingold diet, and offering productive parenting strategies. She is always willing to share her time and expertise with parents searching for an alternative to the use of medication to help manage their child's ADHD at home and in school. She has also been asked to create a special cookbook for busy parents with ADHD children, which has piqued her interest.
