Patients in rehabilitation often struggle existentially which makes them vulnerable. They have a need to be able to cope with the existential changes they are confronted with because of an accident or an illness. Having to adapt to a new characteristics of life and self is challenging and they need individualised caring, emotional support and a goal-oriented and progressive care in which realistic and achievable goals are established. They also need individualized patient education to enhance their independence and empower them towards a new and progressive lifestyle. Healthcare professionals need to assess existential well-being of patients in rehabilitation by the means of skilful interpersonal relationship based on each patient's own hierarchy of needs. Listening to patients' voices can be a powerful tool for healthcare professionals who are looking for ways to providing better services.
