Tanneries are the oldest industries in Bangladesh of which 95 percent are concentrated in Hazaribagh area of Dhaka city. All the industries follow both manual and mechanical processing technique. Due to semi-mechanized processing technique and improper waste management huge polluting substances are discharged by the tannery units to the Hazaribagh area as well as to the Buriganga River without treatment. These waste cause serious health hazards to human and aquatic lives of adjacent area as well as overall Dhaka City. As a result, shifting of these tannery units are demanded by local people, different social and environmental movement body, government, NGOs, Dhaka WASA and different international organizations particularly UNIDO. After relocation of the tanneries, this area will certainly create a huge planning opportunity to execute. From the above perspective it is anticipated that this study is going to open a new window for urban brownfield development practices in Bangladeshand will carry a significant role to sustain a better Dhaka City.
