The present study makes an attempt to review the status of elementary education in the 35 focus districts of civil strife, based on the secondary analysis of District Information System for Education (DISE) data. The Ministry of Home Affairs has identified 83 districts of nine states as Left Wing Extremism affected districts. Out of this 35 districts have been identified as focus districts, where the intensity of violence due to civil strife is immense. The six-year period in the post-launch era of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (Universalization of Elementary Education) is ideal for assessing the educational status such as availability of schools, teachers and facilities and also the enrollment of different caste and gender categories.
