Nature has provided unique opportunity to ruminants in the form of rumen for the utilization of fibrous feeds through the process of rumen fermentation. There is scope for altering or manipulating rumen fermentation to increase the nutrient utilization and to improve efficiency of production in farm animals. Yeast cultures have been reported to change rumen fermentation pattern and to have beneficial effect on ruminant productivity. Problems that are frequently associated with the incorporation of yeast culture strains into animal diets include poor tolerance for temperature, sugar, bile and acid. Normal temperature in the gut of animals limits the use of mesophilic Saccharomyces cerevisiae as probiotic. Hence, thermo tolerant strains have been evolved in order to explore the full potential activity of yeast culture on animal performance. The present investigation revealed that supplementation of thermo tolerant yeast culture in the diet resulted in improved performance of Graded Murrah buffaloes.
