Picture the scene: Prince Charles is the Prince Regent, following problems with the Queen's health. Labour is in power - the old-fashioned, socialist kind - and there's an election coming up. The Labour government wants to depose the monarchy and make the country a republic, and this is a major plank of its campaign. The Tories aren't happy, of course. Traditionalists to a man, they don't want any interference with this benevolent old tradition, despite the unpopularity of the ruler in question, and their senses are sharpened to the scent of treason. Into this mix steps another figure with another way: Charles Stuart, direct descendent of James II and Bonnie Prince Charlie. He has been approached by the Restoration Party to be a third option; to bring the country back to its real royal line, away from these presumptuous Germans we were landed with, and unite the British in patriotism and success. Factor in a kidnapping, a sinister dentist, mass rallies, exploding yachts and a splash of romance, not to mention the obligatory intrigue, plotting and lies, and you end up with a most original and gripping read.
