Every profession considers the development and application of the Professional Code of Ethics and Conduct as a means of maintaining acceptable professional standards. As for the teaching profession, teachers are supposed to exhibit high level of professionalism by observing ethical and moral standards in their relationships with students and other clients. This book, therefore, discusses the meaning, characteristics and the importance of the teaching profession and the professional code ethics and conduct. It also analyses the development and practice of the teachers' code of ethics and conduct. The ethical theories are also presented and discussed. The book further gives insight into the knowledge of teachers and their compliance with the professional code of ethics and conduct focusing on physical education teachers. In addition, the ethical dilemmas in implementing the codes of ethics and conduct are discussed. Conclusions regarding teachers' knowledge and compliance with the professional code of ethics and conduct and the ethical dilemmas they experience are warranted. Finally, recommendations for policy and practice as well as for further study are suggested.

Stephen Mabagala, PhD: Holds a PhD in Professional Ethics in Education from Kenyatta University in Kenya. He has been teaching in the School of Education at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania since 2003. His interest has been in Legal and Ethical Issues in Sports, Swimming, Philosophy of PE and, Administration and Management in Education.
