Underground coal mines frequently suffer from roof falls which have various consequences ranging from fatalities and injuries to downtimes. The cause of the roof fall events have been studied in great detail at many places, but none has produced a successful methodology for forecasting of such an event. This book addresses a multi-hop wireless sensor network (MWSN) based solution for monitoring of roof health status in underground Bord and Pillar mine. In this book, an application driven approach has been introduced for providing a solution to the above problem. A system has been designed, developed and implemented comprising of sensor nodes, routers, local base station, remote station and remote data access from the underground mines to the server room located on the surface. This system addresses the requirements for roof health status monitoring system in underground coal mines in general.
