Implants are commonly and successfully used as bone anchoring elements in oral prosthetic rehabilitation. Despite the high success rates (81-85% for maxilla; 98-99% for anterior mandible at 10 years) failures ranging from 1.5%- 6.7% are still existent. Although implants offer a highly predictable treatment option, for the replacement of single and multiple missing teeth, there are a variety of potential complications that may be surgical, biological, mechanical prosthetic or aesthetic. Careful diagnosis and treatment planning along with the use of diagnostic imaging, surgical guides, meticulous techniques and adherence to proven principles can prevent many of the complications and problems as well as thorough knowledge of anatomy, biology and wound healing.
