Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection that has been associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and cervical cancer in women. These diseases have been strictly correlated with immune tolerance. The studies aimed to establish the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis in pregnant, non-pregnant and HIV-positive women comparing different diagnostic techniques and establishing an association between T. vaginalis and immunodeficiency status. Wet mount microscopy, culture, Papanicolaou smear and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were the diagnostic techniques used to detect the parasite's presence in the cervico-vaginal samples. The higher frequencies of the parasite's infection in pregnant and in HIV-positive women observed in all the studies demonstrated the better susceptibility of T. vaginalis to cytological abnormalities, indicating also a risk factor for HIV infection.
