Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Art - Photography and Film, grade: -, , language: English, abstract: Place is an intangible concept. It is often used within geographical terminology, but the very nature of place eludes easy definition or categorization. In this dissertation I will interrogate the notion of place, how place is differentiated from space and how a photograph represents place using examples from different genres of photography. I will take examples of landscape, urban, architectural and interiors to look in detail at the manner in which photography produces meaning and represents place.A particular aspect of the relationship of photographic representation to place is how photography, using only the singular sense of seeing, can transform a literal reality into a meaningful representation of the multi- sensory experience of actually being in a place. My own photographic practice is based around architectural space and place, so I will be looking in particular at the many factors that influence photographs of buildings and how they represent place.
