The research reported in the monograph presents a comprehensive historical account of Hindi lexicography along with the development of Hindi as a standard language from the 19th century. Beginning the compilation of dictionaries under the influence of Sanskrit tradition, Hindi lexicography makes a remarkable achievement with the monolingual dictionary of Hindi Shabd Sagar, covers a wide range of bilingual dictionaries with Hindi as a source or target language, and the compilation of dictionaries for specific categories of users and domains of usage. The extensive work for the standardization and promotion of Hindi constitutes a major attempt in the compilation of glossaries of scientific and technical terms for various subjects in Humanities and Sciences including the administrative terminology. Finally the monograph presents a contemporary view of Hindi lexicography with the use of computer and heralds the era of electronic dictionary and the field of computational lexicography.
