The research reported in the monograph presents a comprehensive historical account of Hindi lexicography along with the development of Hindi as a standard language from the 19th century. Beginning the compilation of dictionaries under the influence of Sanskrit tradition, Hindi lexicography makes a remarkable achievement with the monolingual dictionary of Hindi Shabd Sagar, covers a wide range of bilingual dictionaries with Hindi as a source or target language, and the compilation of dictionaries for specific categories of users and domains of usage. Finally the monograph presents a contemporary view of Hindi lexicography with the use of computer and heralds the era of electronic dictionary and the field of computational lexicography.

M.A. in English and M.A. in Linguistics, holds a Ph.D degree in Lexicography from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Worked as a linguist in the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore. Working on Metaphoric Competence in Cognitive Linguistic Theory as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the DST, Government of India, placed at CIIL, Mysore.
