It is for this reason that now it appears feasable to design deeply cooled cables for the transmission of the large amounts of energy as they will be required in future. Superconducting dc cables seem to be appropriate for the transmission of large energies over long distances, whereas superconducting ac cables will be advantageously applied for the supply of electrical energy into the towns from the existing ac power net work systems. Theoretical and practical investigations in connection with the develop ment of superconducting cables, carried out in the Anstalt fur Tieftempera turforschung at Graz, are described.
