At this time, there is an increasing impetus on the part of the national and the prefectural governments to take proactive steps to facilitate the commercialization, within the region, of technology developed by the region's research institutes and universities. Our specific interests are in knowing (a) if the various elements of the process of commercialization are working in the right order, (b) what are the various stakeholders thinking about the process, (c) if the desired economic development through commercialization of science is indeed happening and (d) if all the intermediaries are working in tandem to produce the desired results.

Pinaki Nandan Pattnaik is working as Assistant Professor at National Law University, Orissa, India and has two MBA degrees, one from University of Saskatchewan, Canada and the other from Maastricht School of Management, Netherlands. He has had the opportunity to visit Japan in 2005 to develop a regional economic development project.
