Christopher Marlowe was one of the most fascinating figures in Elizabethan England, the celebrated author of "Doctor Faustus" and contemporary of Shakespeare, his suspicious death in a tavern brawl left a reputation shrouded in rumour and intrigue.
David Riggs evokes the atmosphere and texture of Marlowe's life, from the stench and poverty of a childhood spent near Canterbury's abattoirs to the fanatical pursuit of classical learning at school.
