The book describes the effects of sandblasting on the enamel surface after debonding of conventional & customized lingual brackets, bonded using a chemically cured orthodontic bonding material & a dual cure restorative bonding material. The types of enamel defects studied were diffuse and demarcated opacities, enamel fissures & cracks and enamel surface roughness. There is a recent trend towards using restorative bonding materials for orthodontic bonding, using customized brackets which have a much larger bonding base. This type of arrangement, while it gives the clinician a better bond strength and lesser problems clinically, post debonding leads to irreversible damage to enamel structure. Thus, there is a need to establish a balance between the two, and further research is desirable to determine the optimum bond strength required for lingual orthodontic bonding.
