The Department of Homeland Security faces many challenges, from helping to defend America against terrorist attacks, to providing timely and effective support in response to natural disasters. Unmanned Aircraft Systems, properly used, can help the department efficiently meet these challenges. This paper focuses on two of the Department's organizations, the Coast Guard and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Coast Guard can use an off-the-shelf Predator B to fulfill its Reconnaissance and Airborne-Use-of-Force missions more effectively than they can with today's manned aircraft or helicopters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency can also use a Predator B as either a communications relay or as a tool to provide situational awareness in an area with damaged infrastructure.
