Intracranial metastases are the commonest cerebral tumours. Untilnow, no effort has been made to summarise our knowledge ofintracranial metastases in the English language.

This title aims to fill the gap. Intracranial Metastasesis a multiauthored text by some of the best experts working in eachof the subject areas covered. The text is usefully divided intofour main sections. In the first section the biology, pathology,epidemiology, and neuroimaging of intracranial metastases areillustrated and thoroughly discussed. Of particular note is thefirst chapter on the history of treatment for intracranialmetastases. In the second section the different treatment optionsare analysed. New treatments are brought into focus, especiallythose not

used by most physicians who routinely treat patients withintracranial metastases (ie, the treatment of intracranial multiplemetastases). The third section--of most interest for thetreating physician--describes the metastatic disease inrelation to the primary cancer. As a matter of fact, the clinicalcourse of intracerebral metastasis is determined, even if onlytemporarily, by the type of primary tumour. Of particular interestis the chapter on leptomeningeal localisation, which is a commoncause of controversy in the management and treatment ofintracranial metastases. In the last section, metastasis localisedin the cranial base and the neuropsychological features of thedisease are explained together with a clear-cut conclusion of thetext on management guidelines and decision-making. In brief, thepublication of this book is long overdue, and IntracranialMetastases should be considered a reference text for familyphysicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists, andradiotherapists. It is concise but exhaustive. This manual has allthe essential information for a correct management and therapy ofthis pathology. If there is one pitfall to this summary, I wouldsay that the bibliography is not always accurately updated. Thispublication clearly delineates which patients should be treated andfor how long, and will be important in helping physicians to avoidthe overtreatment of patients. Furthermore, this book may encouragetreating physicians to increase the number of patients they treat.Some of these patients will benefit from a few more months of goodquality of life and some others who have germinal metastasis mayeven be cured. I personally like the short summaries at the end ofeach chapter, which bring into focus what has been read before andgive a concise precis of the argument. The editor has nicelycoordinated a board of experienced authors who have excellentlyused the knowledge and experience that they have acquired in theirprofessional lives.
