By (re-)introducing concepts like communication, autopoiesis and meaning, his genuine theoretical outline offers inspiration and new reflections for current social science.This volume contains essays by Danish, German, Norwegian and American scholars who use the elements of the modern systems theory developed by Luhmann to investigate a variety of topics currently facing social scientists of sport. Like this, the anthology represents an attempt to present the application of modern systems theory to a broader English speaking audience.

Ulrik Wagner, born 1974, is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Copenhagen. In 2009 he defended his PhD thesis on "The Struggle for Clean Sports - Anti-doping Strategies from 1960 to 2009". His current research focuses on doping and mass media and on public administration of global anti-doping rules. He also teaches sport and organizational theory and is working on a project (with Rasmus Storm) concerning sport scandals. A part of his PhD thesis has been published in the International Journal of Sport Policy, 2009 and European Sport Management Quarterly (forthcoming, 2010). Rasmus K. Storm, born 1974, holds a position as senior academic researcher at the Danish Institute for Sports Studies. He is also a PhD Scholar at the University of Southern Denmark and Idan. He has previously edited several Danish anthologies and has recently contributed to Soccer and Society on Scandinavian soccer along with editing a book on Danish team handball. Storm's research interests are inthe field of sports economics, sports sociology and the communication of research. He has managed several research projects on Danish elite sport and edited three books on Danish sport. He is regularly interviewed in the Danish media and gives frequent public lectures.John Hoberman, born 1944, received his PhD in Scandinavian Languages & Literatures in 1975 from the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught sports studies courses at Harvard University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Texas, where he is a professor of Germanic Studies. He is the author of Sport and Political Ideology (1984), The Olympic Crisis: Sport, Politics, and the Moral Order (1986), Mortal Engines: The Science of Performance and the Dehumanization of Sport (1992), Darwin's Athletes: How Sport Has Damaged Black America and Preserved the Myth of Race (1997), and Testosterone Dreams: Rejuvenation, Aphrodisia, Doping (2005). His current research interests include sportive nationalism and
