The idea of a personal brand is trendy right now, but like many trends, people use the same words to mean different things. When some people talk about a personal brand they are focused on personal style and physical image, others are talking about professional success, while others are focused on reputation or your social media profiles. When I write about personal branding in this book, I mean all of these things, and more. Your personal brand is your presence, it is all the unique aspects, including your image, behavior, reputation, communication skills, professional achievements, personal experience, ambitions and dreams for the future that are unique to you. When you consciously choose how you express these different parts of yourself, you are creating your personal brand; whether you realize it or not. Before you discard the idea of branding yourself, take a moment to reflect on where you are in your life. Is there any area of your life, either professionally or personally, where you still have goals you would like to achieve? Perhaps you are hoping for a promotion, or maybe you would like to earn more money, or maybe you are single and dating, or considering a relocation where you will need to make new friends. Wherever you are in your life, there is a good chance you still have some milestone in mind that you've yet to conquer. If this is the case, then you will benefit from defining your personal brand and taking the time to define how you will communicate who you are to the world. Do I need a personal brand if...? I'm a successful executive? A college student? A stay-at-home parent? An established business owner? Yes! Wherever you are in your journey, we can all benefit from the exercise of creating a personal brand. The personal branding process is a discovery process. When we intentionally take the time to evaluate our goals and our values, we give ourselves permission to claim what defines us and to frame the story we share with the world. This process of self-discovery provides us with the clarity to prioritize our goals and demands on our time. Once you have taken the time to define who you are and what it is you need, it is easier to let go of things that do not serve you in your daily life.
