Pine bark is a rich source of natural polyphenols, compounds wich have attracted increasing attention in the fields of nutrition, health and medicine. Extractive components includes large amounts of phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds that can be extracted from pine bark include gallic acid, ferulic acid and p-hydrobenzoic acid, monomers such as catechin, epicatechin and taxifolin, and condensed flavonoids such as procyanidins. Pinus bark has been demonstrated to have antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cardio-cerebrovascular protective effects, among others.
