Living in small towns in Iowa during the '50s and '60s had its advantages and disadvantages. It was certainly isolated and protected from the world at large. In a town where everyone knows everyone, it's difficult to keep secrets, hide misbehavior, or act outside certain norms. Friends and family made certain that its young residents were imbued with a sense of honor, respect, and pride for family, hometown, and state.
