On Jacob's journey to Padan Aram from Beersheba to find a wife, he went to sleep one night at a "certain place". This was the now famous "Jacobs ladder" encounter that he named Bethel. Shortly after that he continued on his journey and came across a group of shepherds at a well with a large stone on it where they would all gather and together would lift the stone off so that all could draw water for their herds.
