The vast range of microorganisms the least forms of life that exist everywhere are taken into account by microbial diversity. Bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes are the three main classes of microorganisms. Bacteria and archaea are prokaryotes with a single chromosome containing their genetic material. Most of the genome of eukaryotes is kept in many chromosomes. The key aspects of space microbiology which were discussed to date are covered in this book. Recent results, particularly those applicable to future space exploration programmes, which have not yet been discussed in a critical review, are emphasized. The areas covered include the use of the space environment to understand basic biological mechanisms, such as microbial effects and applications, such as the use of micro-organisms in life support systems for bioregeneration.
