Advanced oxidation technologies (AOT) have been developed for the detoxification of water contaminated with persistent organic chemicals. The method utilizing the strong oxidizing potential of the hydroxyl radical has proven effective and promising technologies which aim at the decolorization and mineralization of a wide range of contaminants including dyes. The strategies for generating the reactive hydroxyl radical ( OH) for these oxidation methods include UV photolysis of hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2), Fenton (Fe(+n)/H2O2) or photo-Fenton type reactions (UV/Fe(+n)/H2O2). Usually Fenton or photo-Fenton reaction used to enhancement the production of OH radicals through the inter- reaction of hydrogen peroxide with Fe+n salts. A cheap source of Fen+ such as zero valent iron (ZVI) powder Fe(0) may be used in the photo-Fenton reaction. Furthermore, application of nanotechnology for the preparation of nanoparticles zero valent iron (NZVI) powder would lead to enhancement the properties of Fe0 powder. One of the main objectives of this study was to prepare iron nanoparticles powder and to investigate its effect on the photodegradation process.
