But now with the doors glitching in and out of existence, thirteen-year-old Deng and a few of his rowdiest friends are able to escape the cells and are running loose in the prison, ready to escape and cause trouble (or at least get some decent food). But before they get the chance to do anything really fun, there's a flash of green light and the boys realise they've been shrunked or something... They're the size of ants, lost in the lawns in the middle of the juvie. And they're not alone.
The adults have been stuck in the shrunked world for a while, and they know how things work. They show the boys that it's not all bad news being shrunked comes with benefits, and the boys each have a power. If they do what the adults say, they can learn how to harness it. If they do what the adults say, they might all be able to escape. But Deng can't shake the feeling that there's something more sinister going on. Can he uncover the truth before it's too late?
Shrunked is book one in the Wellford trilogy; a young adult adventure series, told from the perspectives of some of the kids inside Wellford Youth Justice Centre.
