In the history of the United States of America, millions of Africans and African Americans were victims of the inhumanities of slavery, and even more of them have suffered from discrimination since the abolition of slavery. Although over 150 years have passed since US slavery was officially abolished, the film industry has accomplished that slavery is a contemporary topic again. The change in attitude towards the black population and the political situation in the 2010s probably encouraged film producers to address this problematic period. The aim of this book is to find out how slavery is depicted in contemporary motion pictures. Therefore, one major part focuses on the historical correctness of the movies, and a second part deals with the masculine depiction of the protagonists and their heroic journey. The analysis shows that some movies do not truthfully depict slavery and lack historical accuracy. Additionally, the storylines may seem to be completely different, yet they allfollow the same narrative structure and tell the story of a hero on his journey to find freedom.
