In view of renewed interest in the subject of electrokinetics, Ground Improvement using Electrokinetics is a timely overview of the latest research and its applications. Application of electrokinetics to soft clayey soils, sludge and composts is an inadequately understood technique, largely as it involves an extremely wide range of interacting parameters. The book provides a detailed summary of the literature as well as extensive research carried out in the area of electrokinetic grouting and dewatering of problematic soils. Mechanisms and resulting effects of application of an electric gradient across controlled specimens of selected soils using inert carbon electrodes with addition of stabilizers are reported. An innovative technique of indicating strength improvement by means of water content reduction is also presented. The novel conductive geotextiles used as electrodes for the dewatering study have been fabricated in house, employing various materials. This analysis should help shed some light on this new and exciting application, and should be useful especially to all working in the field of ground improvement be it professionals, researchers and/or graduate students.
