The Department of Defense (DOD), specifically the United States Air Force (USAF) is responsible for the acquisition, operation, and sustainment of the Global Positioning System (GPS). As a result they have the enormous responsibility of keeping pace with the ever-growing military and civilian markets. Conservative modernization deployment strategies, delayed acquisition schedules, and international distrust are a few of the criticisms that face the USAF GPS team. Despite the astronomical growth and dependency on GPS, the DOD strikes an adequate balance between military and civilian users.
