Does your personality influence your success as a
student? Over 40 years of research using the
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator have shown that
personality type is one of a number of factors that
affect your choice of career, your learning style,
and your success in certain subjects. The results
have been widely applied in career counseling,
executive team building, and education. An
understanding of personality type and learning
style can make teaching and learning more effective
by building on the student''s natural strengths and
compensating for natural weaknesses. In Russia, the
Soviet regime established a highly effective system
of standardized education that extended across the
country, and continues today in a modified form. With
fewer variables affecting student success, Russia
is a great natural laboratory for such research. This
study, conducted in collaboration with
the Dean and Philological Faculty at Northern
International University in Magadan, explores the
relationship between personality type and success for
students of English in the Russian Far East.
