VEIJO NOTKOLA is head of the Survey Research Unit at Statistics Finland. From 1992 to 1996 he was Professor of Demography at the University of Helsinki. HARRI SIISKONEN is Associate Professor, Department of History at University of Joensuu, Finland. His publications include Trade and Socioeconomic Change in Ovamboland, 1850-1996.
