A bigger share of a woman s income will be spent on food than a man s, an educated woman will improve the health and increase the probability of her children getting an education more than a man. During an undergraduate course in development economics, it became so clear to me; women s empowerment is the way to go if we want to enhance the living standards of the poorest. This is why I have written this thesis; if we improve women s education and empower women we will improve both her and her children s health, creating a positive spiral. As I progressed with my thesis I realized it wasn t that simple. This thesis focuses on how women s situation in India effects the countries development, with respect to secondary education, female labor force participation and active population growth, measuring these variables effect on Human Development Index (HDI).
