In developing countries like India, the advent of IT has been viewed with immense optimism. The availability of educated manpower, high standard of education, infrastructure, low cost & disciplined labour force are some of the factors which have made Tamilnadu the destination for IT industry. With each passing day, the technology is improving and the systems, processes and networks are becoming more and more complex, putting extra pressure on individuals. Excessive work pressure can lead to stress which undermines performance, is costly to employers and can make people ill. The main objective of this study is to identify key factors at the workplace which generate stress among software professionals in Tamilnadu. The study also focused on the effects and coping strategies of work stress among software professionals. The results of this study have significant implications for organizations and individuals who intend to join the IT profession. By identifying and understanding factors that cause stress at the workplace, organizations and government policy-makers will be better able to design training, motivation and coping programs to help such employees alleviate their stress.
