Viswanathan is Associate Professor at Gujarat Institute of Development Research, Ahmedabad. Had worked as Economist at Rubber Research Institute of India (Government of India) during 1994-2004. Held Visiting Fellowships at Asian Institute of Technology; Chinese University of Hong Kong and Institute for Population and Social Research, Thailand.
