There are a few who have a growing desire - who know little about the Hebrews, Greece and Rome - to become familiar with some of the great historical matters. This demand cannot be met with preliminary manuals. Those who have minds and want to use them do not need a mere summary of facts, but a guide to the best past times of man and the causes that connect him to the world and to God. It is a mistake to think that the public does not care or is unable to understand the problems of religion and philosophy. There are many, not only in universities and schools, but in the vast world outside, who tend to collect this knowledge and yearn with a certain desire to comprehend it, and they turn towards the heritage of the past in the belief that they will benefit from it to solve their own difficulties. It is for these people - in the first place - that this book was written.
